MOUNT HOREB – Leonard Anthony “Tony” Zalucha, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at his home in Mount Horeb, WI.

Tony was born to Leo and Gene Zalucha on April 21, 1948 in Joliet, IL. and grew up in Crystal Lake, IL.  In 1970 he graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with a degree in Anthropology.  He met Peggy Flora at Wesleyan and they were married in April of 1971.  Tony received a Masters Degree in Archaeology at the University of Nebraska, 1977 and his Doctorate at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, 1982.  He ran his private consulting firm, Paleoethnobotanical Consulting, until 2007 at which time he retired and partnered with Peggy in her art and graphics business.  They became residents of Mount Horeb, WI in 1987, embracing the community and were embraced in turn.  Tony served in various volunteer positions in Mount Horeb including as Chairman of the first Police Commission and as a member of the Utility Commission.  He joined the Rotary Club in 2004 and was honored to be Club President for the 2007– 2008 year.  He was proud that he was able to benefit the club and help it expand its outreach into the community and internationally.  From 2014 to 2016, Tony was the President of the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, shepherding the organization as it built the new Driftless Historium.

Tony was an intellectual whose varied interests included classical music and early jazz, collecting art, reading, travel, and his peony garden.  He loved good conversation and found great satisfaction as a host to his many friends. For three summers, he traveled to China to teach English as a second language to students there.  Tony touched many lives, especially Peggy’s.  His support for her art career was steadfast.  She often tells that he was the first person to believe her when she said she was an artist.  Without his encouragement she would not be the fulfilled and creative person that she is today.

Tony’s wishes were to donate his body to medical research so that his scientific contributions could continue after he was gone.

A special thanks is extended to all the fine people at Agrace HospiceCare and especially to nephew Bradley James Flora who assisted with Tony’s health needs for the last eight months of his life.

In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare – Fitchburg, the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, or the Mount Horeb Rotary Club Foundation at the State Bank of Cross Plains.  The ELLESTAD CAMACHO FUNERAL HOME, 500 N 8th St., Mt. Horeb, WI is serving the family.
