Monica A. O’Connell age 83 passed away peacefully from Parkinson’s on February 11, 2018 at Oakwood Retirement Community while surrounded by loving family. One of 10 children, Monica was born into a large farming family, the daughter of Ray and Alice (Dunnigan) Byrns on November 4, 1934 in Black River Falls, WI. Monica was united in marriage to Thomas E. O’Connell on April 11, 1959. Upon graduation from high school, she attended secretarial school. Following this, she worked for the Jackson County Extension Office. It was in this circumstance, that she came to meet her future husband, and in short order, marriage, starting a family and embarking on a life experience which together took them to Sparta, LaCrosse and ultimately Dane County where she lived most of her life.

Monica was a uniquely sensitive, discerning and creative person, and lived life through the prism of her catholic faith. As a writer, Monica faithfully and quietly journaled and wrote poetry throughout her life. She was an early advocate of nutrition and healthy living, for example, she embraced yoga long before it became mainstream. She was uniquely committed to educating herself on the benefits of nutrition, experimenting with new recipes and forging holistic pathways. For Monica, with the exception of “Masterpiece Theater” (the PBS series she would never miss), public radio was her abiding source of information and entertainment. Nature and its creatures were another one of her preoccupations: Monica often took in and rehabilitated hapless strays, feeding and observing native birds, and although a scrupulous housekeeper, she allowed space for a spider to spin his web.

Another way her love of nature revealed itself was through gardening and working in the yard. She regarded a large country lawn not as a source of arduous upkeep, but as an opportunity to engage with nature and sow beauty. Overarching these uniquely refined abilities and hallmark attributes of her character was her lifelong love and devotion she held for her siblings and family. For Monica, life’s divine meaning and joy was articulated through her brothers and sisters, husband, children, grandchildren and a coterie of good friends.

Monica is survived by her husband Thomas; daughter, Katie (John Michael) Jones; daughter Peggy (Erik Johnson); son, Patrick O’Connell; grandchildren, Alissa, Madeleine (Cody) Rome, Olivia Jones; Ian, Caroline, and Lily Johnson; many other beloved brothers and sisters and friends.
