Kristi Rae Hipenbecker, age 63 of Mt. Horeb, WI died peacefully, on Thursday, January 04, 2018 at her childhood home surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 27, 1954 to Stephen and Inez (Brager) Skalet in Madison, WI.  She was raised in the Skalet family tradition of faith, family and love.  She loved singing, and to her, music was connected to family and faith. Kristi studied music at UW Platteville where she met the love of her life, Richard Hipenbecker.  This is where the music of their life story together began.  They married on June 14, 1975 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Horeb, WI. She was a member of the US Army National Guard where she received training to become an LPN and worked at several nursing homes and a hospital.  These skills were later used while caring for her ailing brother and mother. Kristi took joy in the many grand adventures through which their life journey took them, like moving through many states with their military careers, or family owned businesses.  However, the simpler things in life brought her great joy as well; like gardening and canning, a beautiful sunset or fall day on the farm, wildflowers on the side of the road, a family of deer spotted in the woods, a shiny rock found amongst the grass. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and loved passing on the traditions to her kids and grandkids, along with being 1 of 3 generations to be a tour guide at Little Norway. Kristi had a servant heart and lived life passionately, through her ministries in children’s choirs, praise bands, puppet ministries, Christmas programs, bible studies, and serving as a church secretary for 16 years.  Most recently, she was a member of New Heights Lutheran Church in Black Earth, WI, where she and Richard led musical worship. Kristi loved her family and her heavenly father.  She handled her battle with Pancreatic Cancer with courage and grace and was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.  Never was there a challenge in life Kristi did not handle in a positive way.  Even through her fatigue and sickness, she found the strength to start work on the 27 quilts she had hoped to complete for the special people in her life.  Now she is free to sing with God’s choir on High.  Thank you Kristi, for your example to all of us who follow.

Survivors include her husband: Richard, Her children: Heidi (Ryan) Meyer of Richland Center, Holly (Tim) Coley, Carl Hipenbecker, both of Madison, WI; Grandchildren: Megan, Madison, Mason, Marshall, Micah, Maddox; Her siblings: Stephen (Mitzie) Skalet, Jr. of Mt. Horeb; Sharon Erickson of Shawano; Rosalie (John) Richardson of McFarland; Judy (Steve) Dorshorst of Deerfield; Many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother: Larry Skalet (1994), and brother-in-law: Phillip Erickson.
